While Trei Oliver realized that much about the roster still needed to be decided after the spring game, the North Carolina Central coach was certain about the quarterback.
Walker Harris, who was named to the All-MEAC team in 2024, will begin the season as the starter.
“Well, I think coming out our starting quarterback is gonna be Walker Harris,” Oliver said on Saturday. “I think from what we’ve seen throughout the spring right now, Josh Jones is probably gonna be No. 2.”
Harris, who finally took over as the starter after being a multi-season backup to Davius Richard, the school’s all-time leading passer, threw for 1,845 yards, 18 touchdowns, and six interceptions on 226 pass attempts.

Harris was thought to be pushed by Jones, a redshirt freshman who appeared in only four games in 2024 and threw for 284 yards and three touchdowns on 23 passing attempts.
“We got some stuff on film,” said Oliver. “We’ll watch the film and evaluate it today and tomorrow, and then we’ll make some decisions in some other positions knowing that the defense is usually ahead of the offense.”
