After helping lead Florida A&M to its second conference tournament since joining the SWAC, Sterling Young has announced he is entering the transfer portal with a year of eligibility remaining.
Young benefits from a recent NCAA ruling that granted an extra year to players who exhausted their eligibility this season and who previously played for a non-NCAA institution (not including those whose non-NCAA season was played in 2020-2021).
The former JUCO guard transferred to Florida A&M after playing a season at the University of Charlotte.
He was named this season’s SWAC Player of the Year after recording a SWAC-leading 17.0 points per game while shooting 44% from the field.
This makes him the second straight SWAC Player of the Year to enter the transfer portal following the season in which they won the award joining former Jackson State guard Ken Evans.
He led the Rattlers to a 10-8 conference record, qualifying them for the SWAC tournament for the first time since their first season in the conference in 2021.
However, with Young out due to injury, Florida A&M was eliminated in the first round by the eventual runner-up Jackson State.
