Southern University dominated Alcorn State 64-44 on Saturday to claim the SWAC Women’s Basketball Tournament Championship at Gateway Center Arena, securing an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

The Jaguars were led by DK Sanders, Soniyah Reed, and Tionna Lidge, scoring 11 points. Southern’s defense proved pivotal, holding Alcorn State to just four points in the second quarter and maintaining control throughout the game.

The Jaguars outscored the Lady Braves 16-4 in the second quarter to take a commanding lead into halftime.

Southern’s balanced attack and defensive prowess were on full display as they limited Alcorn State’s standout player, Destiny Brown, to 12 points. The Jaguars also capitalized on their depth, with seven players contributing to the scoring effort.

This victory marks Southern’s third SWAC Tournament title in three years and the third under coach Carlos Funchess. The team will now await their seeding in the NCAA Tournament during Sunday’s Selection Show.

Alcorn State’s Cinderella run through the tournament ended in disappointment, but its resilience earned it respect as it upset higher-seeded teams en route to the final.

Devastated by the A&T women’s basketball team loss. They had a great regular season by finishing in first place. I know they will learn from the experience and get better.
