Tennessee State inks agreement to play multi-year football series against HBCU

Tennessee State University has announced a four-year football series with Alabama A&M University, beginning in 2025.

The “Legacy Series” will kick off in Nashville on Sept. 13, 2025. The agreement will see the two teams alternate hosting duties over the following three years, with games tentatively scheduled for Sept. 12, 2026, at Louis Crews Stadium in Huntsville, Alabama; Sept. 11, 2027, in Nashville; and Sept. 16, 2028, in Huntsville.

The “Legacy Series” pays tribute to the rich heritage and traditions of Tennessee State and Alabama A&M, two prominent historically Black colleges and universities. The series will honor the golden era of HBCU football while celebrating the lasting impact of these institutions on the sport and culture. It aims to showcase the athletic excellence and the academic and cultural achievements of both schools.

The Tigers and Bulldogs share a storied rivalry. TSU has led the all-time series 21-8 since their first meeting in 1930.

Their last matchup was in 2010, with TSU claiming a 27-14 victory. Although the opening game of the series is not part of the John Merritt Classic, the teams have a history of competing in classic events, with Alabama A&M holding a 4-3 advantage in the JMC.

Both programs enter the series with momentum. Alabama A&M finished the 2024 season with a 6-6 record, earning wins over common TSU opponents Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Mississippi Valley State.

Tennessee State, under fourth-year head coach Eddie George, had its best season since 2013, finishing 9-4, sharing the OVC regular-season title, and earning an FCS Playoff berth.

George was named OVC Coach of the Year and was a finalist for the Eddie Robinson National Coach of the Year award.

“We’re excited to launch the ‘Legacy Series,’ a celebration of the rich history and excellence of Tennessee State University and Alabama A&M,” said TSU Director of Athletics Dr. Mikki Allen. “This series honors the cultural and athletic legacies that continue to inspire our HBCU community.”
