Winston-Salem State women’s basketball coach L’Tona Lamonte has announced her retirement at the end of the 2024-2025 season.
Lamonte was hired to coach her alma mater in 2016. During her tenure, she led the team to a 98-113 overall record, including a 56-68 record against CIAA competition.
Her best regular season finish came in 2022-2023 when she led the Rams to a 15-9 overall record. This team featured guard Amaya Tucker, who became the first women’s player in school history to win CIAA Player of the Year.
Before taking over as head coach at Winston-Salem State, Lamonte had an extensive career coaching at the Division I level.
Previous stops include North Carolina Central, North Carolina State, Belmont, Georgia Southern, and Western Carolina.
“I’m really thrilled and excited for the opportunity I had to come back to my alma mater and the city I grew up in,” said Coach Lamonte. “I’ve learned and grown and met some amazing people and have been around so many amazing people that have helped guide my footsteps into my next direction which is administration. I’ll never forget the memories I have or the players that have come in and [bought] into the system. We may not have won the award just yet, but there is still time for us to do some amazing things this season.”
Winston-Salem State currently holds a 4-13 overall record, including its first conference win of the season in its last outing against Shaw.
The Rams are seeking their first tournament championship in school history.
