Less than a week after their original choice for head football coach stepped aside, Shaw University has regrouped and hired an old friend to run the team.
Lamar Manigo, who served as former coach’s Adrian Jones offensive coordinator for six seasons, will return as head coach, Shaw announced Tuesday morning. Manigo takes the place of Greg Ruffin, who announced last week he would decline the job due to health concerns.
“We are happy to welcome Coach Lamar Manigo back to Shaw University,” Shaw athletic director George Knox said. “His passion for the game, dedication to mentoring student-athletes, and commitment to excellence align perfectly with our vision for the football program. We are confident that he will lead the Bears to new heights.”
“I am honored and excited to return to Shaw University as head football coach,” Manigo added. “This is a homecoming for me, and I look forward to working with our talented student-athletes to build a program that makes our university and alumni proud.”
Manigo recently served as Virginia State’s offensive coordinator, creating a Trojan offense that was second behind Virginia Union in the CIAA, averaging 30.4 points per game.
Manigo’s introductory press conference will take place Tuesday Jan. 21 at 11 a.m. in Estey Hall on Shaw’s campus.
