The Mississippi Valley State marching band is nearing the finish line in achieving its financial travel goal to perform in Washington, D.C.
The Mean Green Marching Machine was invited weeks ago to perform at a parade ahead of Donald Trump’s inauguration on Jan. 20.
“This is not just a moment of pride for our university but for the entire state of Mississippi,” said Dr. Jerryl Briggs, MVSU President, in a statement. “It is an opportunity to showcase our legacy, celebrate our culture, and invest in the future leaders of our community. This participation allows students to engage in the peaceful transition of power and gain global exposure while celebrating the university’s 75th anniversary.”
The total cost of this historic trip, including travel, accommodations, meals, and equipment, was approximately $350,000, the school said.
However, despite facing online criticism for its decision to play at the inauguration, the band has received $266,282 as part of a GoFundMe crowdfunding effort as of Monday.
“Although I don’t agree with the politics, I support Valley’s Mission,” wrote donor Marvin Lewis. “Thanks for giving me an amazing Upward Bound experience back in the early 80’s.”
Said donor Tanner White: “No matter the politics, no matter the reasoning people have to hate, true American citizens know the importance of unity and sticking together. This is an amazing opportunity for these young adults to show up, and show off. Go Mean Green.”
The band has previously performed at NBA games, the Rose Bowl Parade, Mardi Gras parades, the National Showband Battle of the Bands, and other notable band competitions.
