After three seasons as Alabama State’s defensive coordinator, Ryan Lewis Sr. is expected to be taking on a similar role on the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) coaching staff.

“Bama State, the past three years have been some of the most important and impactful years of my life,” said Lewis in a statement. “I love it here, and I will always love it here. Alabama State University has done things for me that I don’t believe any other institution would have. I wouldn’t be where I am today without ASU.”

Lewis’s time at Alabama State comes to an end after three seasons, having joined the team upon the hiring of head coach Eddie Robinson Jr.

In each of his three seasons at Alabama State, the Hornets boasted one of the top defensive units in the SWAC, allowing fewer than 20 points per game each year.

The Hornets led the SWAC in scoring defense in each of the last two seasons, including a 2023 season in which they finished second in the FCS, allowing 14.5 points per game.

Lewis will be tasked with turning around a UAB defense that ranked 120th and 130th (out of 134 teams), respectively, in the FBS in scoring defense in their first two seasons in the American Athletic Conference.
