Thursday afternoon, Delaware State University and HBCU Wrestling announced a one-of-a-kind partnership that will bring Division I women’s wrestling to Dover beginning with the 2025-26 season.
Thanks to a $1.25 million gift by HBCU Wrestling, DSU will become the first HBCU with a D-I women’s wrestling program. A search for a head coach will soon begin.
“The partnership with HBCU Wrestling gives our women student-athletes a platform to compete, grow, and inspire others. We are excited for this new chapter and the impact it will have for years to come,” DSU Athletic Director Alecia Shields-Gadson said in a statement released by the university.
HBCU Wrestling previously donated $2.7 million to Morgan State to revive its men’s wrestling program and this will be a wrestling revival of sorts for DSU as well. The Hornets had a men’s wrestling program for years until it was discontinued after the 2008-2009 season.
“This announcement is not only about wrestling; it’s about expanding access to life-changing opportunities,” HBCU Wrestling executive director Jahi Jones said. “At HBCU Wrestling, we’ve built a foundation that now allows young women to succeed, thrive, and lead while still being in an environment where they feel seen, valued, and loved. This program aligns with the incredible growth of women’s wrestling nationwide, and I look forward to a strong, lasting partnership with Delaware State University that will inspire and empower future generations.”
The program’s roots began with an on-campus clinic held by Toccara Montgomery, the first Black woman to win a world championship and represent the United States at the Olympic games in wrestling.

When I held a camp at DSU not long ago, I saw firsthand the excitement and potential in the athletic staff and community. This new program is more than just an opportunity—it’s a historic step forward that will inspire young women of color to chase their passions and know they belong at the highest levels of sport.”
