Vincent Brown says he’s ‘absolutely’ right coach to lead NC A&T football despite program spiral

Some 48 hours after he watched his team suffer an embarrassing homecoming loss, North Carolina A&T head coach defended his job.

A reporter asked Brown on Monday whether he is the right man for the job amid a tenure that has seen the Aggies go 2-16 since he was named head coach.

“Absolutely,” said Brown in response before leaving the podium.

NC A&T athletic director Earl Hilton, who was in attendance at the media briefing, agreed that Brown is the leader moving forward.

About 15 minutes before he was asked that question, Brown provided an opening address that began with explaining how difficult it has been to explain each week how and why NC A&T came up short.

“So I shared this with our staff the other day,” Brown began Monday’s press conference. “I said, ‘You guys don’t know how incredibly challenging it is to come up here on Mondays after having the kind of season that we are having.’ It’s very challenging.

“Some of the things that we are going through I didn’t anticipate, some of the adversity I am built for. … Stay the course, stay focused on the development of our players, making sure they become the absolute best that they can be on and off the field, stay focused on providing them with a great experience here. When they leave here, they want to come back and say, ‘The best four or five years of my life were there at North Carolina A&T.'”

Brown, who said that he would not make changes to the coaching staff, said the morale remains upbeat despite all the losses.

“I believe in our staff. We’ve got great leaders, and they care deeply about the development of our players,” Brown said.

“This is a results-oriented business, but sometimes those results aren’t immediate. What we need to see is improvement and progress.”
