Jackson State coach T.C. Taylor shares his QB plan ahead of Texas Southern matchup

For several weeks, Jackson State coach T.C. Taylor has deployed Jacobian Morgan and Cam’Ron McCoy to run the Tigers offense.

And despite McCoy exiting at some point due to injury in his last three appearances—all starts—Taylor indicated that not much would change in terms of how he uses the quarterbacks ahead of the Tigers’ SWAC opener at Texas Southern in Houston on Saturday night

In last Saturday’s 41-20 loss at Grambling State, both Morgan and McCoy were choppy.

McCoy threw for 140 yards, including an interception, while also rushing for 20 yards. Morgan threw for 139 yards, an interception, and a fumble that led to a Grambling touchdown.

“I kind of like the way things are going right now,” Taylor said on Monday. “They both have been playing pretty good.”

And for the most part, Morgan and McCoy have been steady in a run-heavy Jackson State offense.

McCoy has thrown for 266 yards and three TDs. Morgan has compiled 670 yards, five touchdowns, and two interceptions.

If anything, Taylor wants McCoy, a dual-threat quarterback, to make it through games unscathed to establish more rhythm and continuity within the offense.

“I would like for Cam to stay upright in a game,” said Taylor. “That’s something we have to look at. With him going down, we have to take a look at that in practice.

“It’s part of the game, you know. It’s frustrating to him to go out there, and he wants to try to get through a full four quarters of football,” Taylor said. “But it is what it is. It’s up to us, you know, again, to get the right guy out there. But it is frustrating to the coaches, staff, the players, and to Cam as well.”
