The Delaware State football team is scheduled to face Hawaii in the 2024 season opener, but it will be somewhat delayed in getting there.
Stephen Tsai of the Hawaii Star Advertiser confirmed an earlier report that the Hornets missed their 10-hour flight to Hawaii thanks to bus trouble.
“Delaware State spokeswoman confirms Hornets missed today’s 10.5-hour flight to Honolulu because of a bus snafu to JFK airport, Tsai wrote on Twitter. “We’re working on a plan,”’ she said.”
Late Tuesday night, Pennsylvania-based Wertz Motor Coaches, the company that handled the team’s travel, explained in a statement that “an internal scheduling malfunction” in the company’s reservation system led to the team being delayed and ultimately missing the flight.
The Hornets, should they get there, will be the first HBCU to play in Hawaii since Eddie Robinson’s Grambling State Tigers defeated the Rainbow 34-23 on October 2, 1976.
DSU is starting its second season under former Morgan State head coach and Howard offensive coordinator Lee Hull. The Hornets finished 2023 1-10, 0-5 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play.
