Alabama State head football coach Eddie Robinson Jr. has shown in the past that he’s not afraid to give multiple quarterbacks playing time.
So it should come as no surprise to anyone that a battle has broken out just about three weeks away from the team’s season debut in the Orange Blossom Classic against MEAC favorite North Carolina Central.
Texas Southern transfer Andrew Body, who is looking to rebound from an injury-plagued 2023 season, is in competition with Jonah O’Brien, a transfer from Eastern Illinois who led that team in passing yards in 2022 but saw very little action in 2023.
“Jonah has done a great job coming in with the right mindset and he’s here to compete to be a starter,” Robinson told the Montgomery Advertiser. “I told him I didn’t bring him in to be a backup and I want him to compete to get reps and be the best guy. Whether its him, Body or Zach Sims, however it works out we just want to win football games.”
Preseason predictors picked the Hornets to win the Southwestern Athletic Conference’s Eastern Division. They are hoping to find an offensive spark that matches their nationally recognized defense. ASU will face North Carolina Central on Sunday, Sept. 1, in Miami Gardens for the annual Orange Blossom Classic, to be televised on ESPN.
