Saint Augustine’s University is hoping for a miracle to keep the school open, according to interim president Dr. Marcus Burgess.
And that has a direct impact on the school’s football program.
“It will take roughly $27 to $28 million dollars and $30 million for good judgment because there’s still deferred maintenance pieces that have to happen,” Burgess told CBS 17 “I have had employees tell me they’re sticking by us, but it’s really tough.”
The university has moved to remote learning, and football will be suspended for the 2024 season as a part of the plan to keep SAU open. According to CBS 17, about 120 of the university’s 800 students remain on campus, and graduation is still scheduled for May 4.
Burgess remains hopeful and steadfast that St. Augustine’s can be saved.
“I came here to make a difference and I will not leave here until that difference has been made and we are on greener grass,” he said. “We have one mission and that is to fight for Saint Augustine’s.”
