Grambling State clinched the SWAC men’s regular season title for the second consecutive year following a 69-60 victory over Bethune-Cookman on Monday night at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center. The win ensures the Tigers will be the No. 1 seed in the upcoming SWAC Men’s Basketball Tournament in Birmingham, Alabama.
The accomplishment marks Grambling State’s third regular season title since head coach Donte Jackson took over the program in 2017. Three players who scored in double figures highlighted the team’s success: Jourdan Smith led with 17 points, Tra’Micahel Moton with 14 points, and Jalen Johnson with 11. Antwan Burnett was also a key player, nearly achieving a double-double with 13 rebounds and nine points.
The Tigers (16-13, 13-3 SWAC) play took control of the game early on. Despite trailing 12-11 in the first half, they captured a lead with a layup by Mikael Stevenson and maintained their advantage throughout the game. A significant 12-4 run before halftime helped Grambling State to a 35-26 lead, which they extended to double figures in the second half, eventually securing their largest lead of 17 points.
Bethune-Cookman (15-15, 10-7 SWAC) attempted a late rally but could only narrow the gap to seven points, allowing Grambling State to win. The Tigers were efficient from the field, shooting 41.5 percent overall and an impressive 50.0 percent from three-point range.
The Tigers will conclude their regular season on the road with games against Alabama A&M on Thursday in Huntsville and Alabama State on Saturday in Montgomery.
