Fred McNair, the former head football coach at Alcorn State, is set to join the coaching staff at Southern University, according to the Jaguar Journal’s Reggie Flood, who made the announcement Thursday on Facebook.
The development comes months after McNair’s anticipated move to become the head football coach at Texas Southern was put on hold. It seemed almost certain that McNair would take the helm at TSU following his departure from Alcorn State.
However, the Texas Southern Board of Regents delayed the decision to approve McNair’s contract, leaving the process in limbo. Despite having agreed in principle to a contract, the board opted for additional time to consider their decision and eventually hired former Houston Oilers cornerback Cris Dishman as head coach.
While the specifics of McNair’s responsibilities at Southern are uncertain, Flood informed HBCU Sports Thursday afternoon that McNair could possibly have the title of assistant head coach.
McNair’s coaching credentials include an eight-season tenure at Alcorn State, where he compiled a 48-33 overall record, secured four SWAC East titles, and led the team to two Celebration Bowl appearances in 2018 and 2019.
