The Alabama A&M Bulldogs are not short of confidence as they set their sights on winning the SWAC for the first time since the 2020 spring season.
Bulldogs defender and All-SWAC preseason team selection Zareon Hayes guaranteed his team would win the conference to conclude his media day interview.
“We’re going to be ready this year. We’re going to make y’all proud,” Hayes said. “And we’re going to win the SWAC championship.”
Head coach Connell Maynor talked about his game plan heading into the 2023 season, saying the objective on offense is a balanced attack.
“We want to be balanced on offense,” said Maynor. “We want to run the ball, we want to throw the ball to try to keep the other team off balance. If you can do both, you’re ahead in the game. If they make you one-dimensional, you’re going to have problems.”
Meanwhile, Maynor wants his defensive unit to “fly around, make plays, cause turnovers, put some pressure on the other team’s quarterback, and get off the field.”
Alabama A&M finished the 2022 season with a 4-7 overall record and a 4-4 record in the SWAC. The Bulldogs are searching for their first SWAC championship since spring 2021.
The Bulldogs’ season will kick off in Nashville on Sept. 2 against SEC opponent Vanderbilt.
