Gonzales, who was named to the National Southern League Conference all-conference team, had offers from Valdosta State, Norfolk State, Mississippi Valley State, Grambling, Arkansas Pine Bluff, Texas Southern, and Jackson State. However, his top choices, which were all HBCUs, made it clear that he would be attending an HBCU — it was just a matter of which one.
