As Fayetteville State prepare for a run at back-to-back CIAA championships, they will likely have to do so without one of their top defenders from last season.
All-CIAA defensive lineman Cameron Merrell has announced he is entering the transfer portal. Merrell now joins Devin Cowan, fellow team leader in sacks from last season, in potentially moving on this offseason.
In addition, Fayetteville State will also be without its top defensive back Brandon Barnes-Brown who led the team with three interceptions last year.

Merrell played his first season at Fayetteville State in 2021 after transferring from Valdosta State.
He finished this past season with 94 tackles, 14.5 tackles for loss, 9.5 sacks, two fumble recoveries, and a forced fumble. He was named to the All-CIAA Second Team.
His best performance came in the Broncos’ first matchup against Chowan in which he recorded 12 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, and 3 sacks.
