David Thomas Sr. was a self-described “baseball man” growing up in Alabama State, he told a local newspaper. He constantly played with his friends and earned a baseball scholarship to Alabama State.

Decades after his career ended, Thomas has been a fixture in the youth sports community as a coach and wants to continue to expose the game to Montgomery, Alabama ballplayers.

On May 17, Thomas, along with area college and high school coaches, will hold a free middle school baseball and softball skills camp open to young athletes in sixth, seventh, and eighth graders.

The one-day camp is scheduled to be held at Chisholm Park, 545 E. Vandiver Blvd. in Montgomery, from 4 to 8 p.m.

Also confirmed to appear as a volunteer will be former Jackson State baseball coach Mark Salter. Salter spent five seasons as Tigers coach, compiling a 147-131 record.

For more information, contact Thomas by phone at 334-322-4909 or email at [email protected].
