NEW ORLEANS, La. – Coppin State’s Joseph Amoah has been named the United States Track & Field & Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Mid-Atlantic Region Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year, it was announced by the organization on Friday afternoon. This is the second time that Amoah has received the honor after winning the award in 2019 as well.

A senior from Greater Accra, Ghana, Amoah qualified for the NCAA National Championships in three events, the 100m dash, 200m dash, and 4x100m Relay. Amoah was also a member of Coppin’s 4x400m Relay that qualified for the NCAA East Preliminaries last week.

Amoah won both of his opening round heats in the 100m and 200m dash at the East Preliminaries before qualifying automatically for Nationals with his Quarterfinal performances. In the 100m dash, Amoah clocked a 10.06 to win his heat before running a season-best time of 20.32 in the 200m dash, finishing just a hundredth of a second behind the leader. Earlier in the night, Amoah ran a leg of the 4x100m Relay that finished in a season-best 39.57, which is the second-fastest time in school history.

Earlier in the season, Amoah clocked a personal record in the 100m dash with a time of 10.00 (w) at the Aggie Invitational on April 10. Amoah also traveled to Poland for the 2021 World Relays to help his native Ghana qualify for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics in the 4x100m Relay with a sixth-place time of 38.79. Ghana took third in the Finals of the 4x100m relay at the World Relays but was disqualified for a handoff outside the passing zone.

Amoah is set to run in the NCAA National Championships in Eugene, Oregon on June 9-12 in all three events. On Wednesday night, Amoah will join teammates Joseph Manu, Malik John and Abayie Opuni in the 4x100m Relay at 8:02 pm Eastern. Later that night, Amoah will compete in the 100m dash at 9:16 pm and the 200m dash at 10:14 pm.
