The SWAC champions received a commitment from the son of an NBA Hall Famer.

Shaqir O’Neal, the son of Shaquille O’Neal, announced Friday his intentions to play basketball at Texas Southern.

The three-star 6-foot-7 recruit out of McDonough, Georgia, said in his announcement on social media that he “wanted to the change the narrative of (the) culture and do something new.”

In addition to Texas Southern, Shaqir O’Neal also received an offer from Alabama State.

Shaqir O’Neal will play for someone familiar to his famous father in head coach Jonny Jones, who was an LSU assistant when Shaquille O’Neal was a college player there in the early 1990s.

The Tigers will certainly get a boost fresh off a SWAC Tournament championship and appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
