Southern men’s and women’s basketball teams dominate Mississippi Valley State on MLK Day

BATON ROUGE, LA – Southern (3-4, 3-0 SWAC) extended its three-game winning streak Monday afternoon blowing out Mississippi Valley State (0-12, 0-4 SWAC) 102-61.

Six Jaguars scored in double figures led by junior Samkelo Cele who recorded a career-high 18 points, seven rebounds on 15 minutes of play. Graduate transfer Harrison Henderson chipped in 12 points and nine rebounds finishing one rebound shy of recording his third straight double-double. Junior Jayden Saddler added 12 points, seven assists while redshirt senior Lamarcus Lee contributed 12 points and seven rebounds. Redshirt senior Ahsante Shivers finished with 10 points and five rebounds. Senior Andre Allen finished with a career-high 10 points and 10 rebounds recording his first double-double in a SU uniform.

MVSU scored the first basket of the game taking their only lead of the afternoon 3-0 before SU went on a 10-0 run capped off by Allen layup with 16:00 left in the half. Cele came off the bench and connected on a jumper from the left-wing followed by a three-pointer with 13:39 left in the half starting the Jaguars on a 16-8 run. Allen jumper at the 1:10 mark caped off SU 51 point half and taking the lead into the locker room 51-38.

In the second half, the Jaguars picked up right where they left off, stretching the lead to 65-42 before the 16:00 media timeout. The Jaguars’ largest lead was 44 points.

Southern shot 55.7% from the field (34-61), 42.9% from behind the arc (9-21), shot 83.3% from the free-throw line (25-30) while MVSU was 37.3% from the floor and SU defense held the Devils to 30.3% from behind the three-point line. SU outrebounded the Devils 44-18.

Caleb Hunter led MVSU with 23 points, Terry Collins finished with 15 points and Treylan Smith added 11 points for the Delta Devils.

The Jaguars will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 23 when they travel to Alabama A&M for a 2:00 pm tip-off in Huntsville.

Lady Jaguars Dominate Mississippi Valley State

The Lady Jaguars dominated the Lady Delta Devilettes Monday afternoon, cruising to a twenty-seven point victory over Mississippi Valley State 87-60 at the F.G. Clark Activity Center.

SU jumped out early on MVSU led by Genovea Johnson hitting the Jaguars’ first four points. The Lady Jaguars closed out the first half on a 7-0 run off a three-point basket deep from the right side by Nakia Kincey with 1:39 left in the half.

Johnson finished the night with 23 points shooting 9-of-13 from the field and 5-of-6 from the charity stripe. Raven White added 15 points, Kincey finished with 14 points and two rebounds and Amani Mcwain chipped in 11 points along with four rebounds.

“I was very happy with the effort level and the performance of everyone tonight. We got off to a hot start offensively and kept going throughout the game. The players have done a great job putting in extra work and continuing to get better each and every week. We will get back in the gym on Wednesday and get ready for a big Alabama road trip this weekend.”, said Head Coach Carlos Funchess.

The Lady Jaguars defense forced the Lady Devilettes to 26 turnovers, picking up 33 points off turnovers. SU played all ten players with nine landing in the scoring column. Southern shot 58 percent for the game (33-57) and 41 percent from behind the arc (7-17). SU shot 70 percent from the charity stripe finishing (14-20).

Diamond Wraggs had a career night for Mississippi Valley shooting 7-of-10 from the field with 17 points and six rebounds. Zakiya Mahoney added 13 points and five rebounds and Ronni Williams chipped in 12 points in forty minutes of play.
