Alcorn State received automatic NIT bid over Grambing State. Here’s why

LORMAN, Miss. – Alcorn State University was saddened to announce the passing of Dr. James A. Brooks, a former athletic director and assistant football coach at the institution.

Brooks served as Director of Athletics at Alcorn for three years from 1989-92. During that span, the Alcorn women’s basketball team won back-to-back SWAC Conference Tournament titles in 1990-91 and 1991-92.

Prior to his time as athletic director, Brooks was an assistant football coach with the Braves for 17 seasons under legendary head coach Marino Casem from 1968-84. Brooks helped the Braves win seven SWAC Championships (1968, 69, 70, 74, 76, 79, 84) and four Black College National Championships (1968, 69, 74, 84).

As an undergrad, Brooks was a three-sport athlete at Jackson State from 1956-60. He was a running back with the football team, a second baseman on the baseball team and a hurdler on the track & field team. He played semi-pro baseball with the New Orleans Pelicans.

A native of McComb, Mississippi, Brooks was inducted into the SWAC Hall of Fame in 2009.
