Tennessee State offensive lineman Lachavious Simmons was selected in the seventh round of NFL draft Saturday by the Chicago Bears, becoming the first HBCU player to be taken this year.
Simmons was one of many college stars invited to NFL’s 2020 Historically Black Colleges and Universities Combine in March before it was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Simmons, a 6-foot-5, 315-pound tackle appeared in 12 games for the Tigers last season. As a redshirt senior, Simmons was named to the Ohio Valley Conference’s first team.
