‘It’s safe to say that it’s going to happen’: LSU-Southern moving closer to historic football matchup

The campuses are only separated by only nine miles, but LSU and Southern are tentatively set to meet for the first time on a football field in 2022.

Southern athletic director Roman Banks told the Lafayette Daily Advertiser that a formal announcement will be made within a week to officially set a date, which is believed to be some time in September 2022.

“The magic will be happening with a formal announcement in maybe three or five days and no more than two weeks,” Banks told the Advertiser. “It’s safe to say that it’s going to happen.”

Banks said he had discussed prospects of a game with LSU “the last six months.”

Banks has been in discussions recently with LSU deputy athletic director Verge Ausberry, who handles scheduling for the football program.

LSU deputy athletic director Verge Ausberry said the school was still exploring it, though, current athletic director Scott Woodward said he was “excited” about the two schools meeting.

Southern is expected to receive in the neighborhood of $500,000 for the game from LSU, the newspaper reported.

This will be an historic game,” Banks said. “Both schools are in the same city. Other lower division teams that LSU has brought in have a lot of empty seats. That won’t happen with this game. Our fans will be going. I believe there won’t be enough space for tailgating. Both schools are known for the best tailgating.”
