ORANGEBURG, SC – Two former South Carolina State track standouts will be among athletes from across the country competing at the 2019 USA Track & Field Championships July 25-27 at Drake University in Des Moines, IA.
The top three place winners in each event will go on to represent Team USA in the World Championships in Doha, Qatar Sept. 27-Oct. 6, 2019.
Monroe, GA native Demek Kemp will participate in the 100 meters, while Tyrell Richard of Georgetown, SC, is entered in the 400 meters. The duo re-wrote the record books in their specific events at SC State during stellar Bulldog careers. Both received their undergraduate degrees this past May.
Kemp, the Bulldog record-holder in the 100 meters with a time of 10.03, is tied for 10th among the 2019 participants. His first action will be Thursday (Jul. 25) in the first round of the event, which is set for 5:05 p.m. CT. The top 16 advance to the 100-meter semifinal on Friday at 6:02 CT.
Richard, who established the SC State 400-meter record in a clocking of 44.81, is seventh among the competitors in the 400 meters. His first race will also be on Thursday, beginning at 7:12 p.m. CT. The 400-meter semifinal will be run on Friday at 7:14 p.m. CT.
Selected events from the USATF Championships will be televised by NBC Sports Gold, beginning at 2:45 p.m. CT Thursday; 12:30 p.m. CT Friday; and 1 p.m. CT Saturday. Other networks carrying selected events include NBCSN, 6-8 p.m. CT Friday; and NBC 3-5 p.m. CT Saturday.
