HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Akia Armstrong saved her best for last claiming her first victory of the season in the long jump Friday at the Carey Last Chance meet.

Armstrong leap of 18 feet, 9 inches (5.71 meters) is a season-best, which qualifies her for the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships May 23-25 in Gulf Shores, Alabama.

The senior wasted little time as she surpassed the NAIA ‘B’ qualifying standard of 5.65 meters on her first attempt. The Riverside, California, native scratched her next two jumps but not before punching her ticket to nationals.

Armstrong joins Cody Branch (100 m), Jovan Roaches-Lambey (Triple Jump) and the men’s 4×100-meter relay as national qualifiers.
