Alabama State sweep SWAC men’s and women’s track & field titles

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas — The Alabama State Women’s Track and Field claimed team their 10th consecutive Southwestern Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field title leading the field with 177.5 total points.

Prairie View A&M finished second with 154.5 points followed by Grambling State (101), Texas Southern (74), and Arkansas-Pine Bluff (73) to round out the top team standings.

On the men’s side, Alabama State claimed the title in spectacular fashion as head coach Ritchie Beene won his first Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Championship as head coach.

Jackson State finished in second place with 169.5 points, followed by Prairie View A&M (126), Arkansas-Pine Bluff (99), and Southern (72).

Alabama State claimed the women’s 2019 SWAC Outdoor Track and Field 4×400 Meter Relay title running an impressive time of 3.41.08 while Arkansas-Pine Bluff took home the gold on the men’s side with a time of 3:06.67.

DAY THREE HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Alabama State’s Nia Jack claimed gold in the women’s 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash, running times of 11.65 and 23.73, respectively.
  • Prairie View A&M’s Alicia Carter won the 400-meter dash with a time of 54.13.
  • Alabama State ’s Arion Span won the 800-meter run and 1500-meter run with times of 2:10.26 and 4:44.65.
  • Grambling State’s Winny Chirchir won the 5,000-meter run with a time of 19:14.70.
  • Alabama State’s Shamaria Lovett won the 100-meter and 400-meter hurdles with time of 13.77 and 59.46.
  • Jackson State’s Hannah White won the discus title with a throw of 47.11m.
  • Alabama State’s Kevin Spraggins won the 100 and 200-meter dash events with times of 10.35 and 21.05.
  • Mississippi Valley State’s Laval Davis won the 400-meter dash running a time of 46.39.
  • Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s Wade Garner claimed gold in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:49.65.
  • Alabama State’s Joshua Coffelt won the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:00.58.
  • Hassan Chepkwony of Grambling State won the 5000-meter run with a time of 16:03.14.
  • Jackson State’s Azariah Foster claimed the 110-meter and 400-meter hurdles title with times of 13.71 and 51.43.
  • Alabama State’s Caesar Kemp won the discus with a throw of 48.67m.
  • Safiya John and Miles Dortch of UAPB were named women’s and men’s Most Outstanding Field Performers with 23 and 26 points respectively.
