BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Southern University women’s basketball team assured itself at least a share of the Southwestern Athletic Conference women’s basketball regular season championship thanks to a 51-39 victory over Alcorn State on March 2.
The victory, coupled with Prairie View A&M’s 67-59 defeat at Alabama State on March 4, pushed Southern to 13-3 in conference play. This is the second straight season that the Jaguars have earned a share of the title, as the team won it outright last season with a 14-4 record in conference play.
For coach Carlos Funchess, who is in his first season as head coach of the Jaguars, this is his first regular season title. Funchess is the first SWAC coach to win a regular-season title in his inaugural season as a team’s coach since the 2012-13 season. That year, Cynthia Cooper-Dyke guided Texas Southern to the regular season crown in her first and lone season as the Lady Tigers’ coach.
The Jaguars can clinch the regular-season title outright, as well as the top overall seed in the 2019 Toyota SWAC Women’s Basketball Tournament, with a win over Prairie View A&M on March 7. In the teams’ prior meeting on Jan. 5, Prairie View A&M won 55-54 thanks to an Artavia Ford lay-up with seven seconds left.
