Arkansas-Pine Bluff rallies late to drop Texas Southern in nationally televised matchup

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff forward Shaun Doss has been named the Southwestern Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week. The league made the announcement Tuesday morning.

Doss, a 6-5 sophomore from Marion, Ark., averaged 22.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 2.5 assists over two games this past week. He shot an astounding 68 percent (17-of-25) from the field and 77.8 percent from the line (7-of-9)

Versus North Texas, Doss scored 22 points along with four rebounds and three assists, shooting 8-of-13 from the floor. At the time, the 22 points represented a career-high for Doss, but in the Golden Lions’ next game versus Missouri State, Doss dropped 23 points. Doss came into the week averaging 11.3 points per game, good for second on the team.

Other Notable Performances:

– Alabama State guard Jacoby Ross averaged 18.7 points and 3.3 rebounds over the past week, scoring 21 or more points in two of the Hornets’ three games this past week. Ross shot 50 percent from deep (11-of-22) and 48.7 percent from the floor. Versus Campbell, Ross tied his season-high with 25 points.

– Grambling State guard Dallas Polk-Hilliard averaged 15.0 points and 6.5 rebounds over the past week, highlighted by a 17-point, 10-rebound effort in the Tigers Dec. 22 contest versus No. 16 Wisconsin.

– Jackson State guard Chris Howell, last week’s recipient of the SWAC Player of the Week nod, was a rebound short of his third-straight double-double, scoring 19 points and getting nine boards in JSU’s 81-72 setback versus Central Michigan. Teammate Jayveous McKinnis notched a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards.

– Alabama A&M guard Brandon Miller scored 19 points along with seven assists and seven rebounds during the Bulldogs’ 67-59 win over Tulane. Miller also had a 13-point, six-assist effort against South Alabama this past Thursday.

– Jackson State guard Chris Howell, last week’s recipient of the SWAC Player of the Week nod, was a rebound short of his third-straight double-double, scoring 19 points and getting nine boards in JSU’s 81-72 setback versus Central Michigan. Teammate Jayveous McKinnis notched a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards.

– Texas Southern guard Jayln Patterson scored 21 points along with five rebounds during the Tigers’ lone contest this week versus Lamar. Teammate Trayvon Reed scored 15 points, grabbed nine rebounds and swatted five shots.

– Prairie View A&M guard Gary Blackston scored 22 points along with seven rebounds in the Panthers’ loss at Seattle.
