Sandy Pugh resigns as head women’s basketball coach at Southern

BATON ROUGE — Sandy Pugh has resigned as head coach of the Southern University women’s basketball program after 18 seasons, Southern University Director of Athletics Roman Banks confirmed Monday in a statement.

Since her arrival at Southern in 2000, Pugh transformed the women’s basketball program into a perennial championship contender. She produced 15 winnings season and was named the Southwestern Athletic Conference Coach of the Year four times during her tenure. The Jaguars won the SWAC regular-season title seven times (2002, 2006, 2010, 2011, 2014, 2016, 2018) and the SWAC tournament title (2002, 2004, 2006, 2010).

“Coach Sandy Pugh single-handedly elevated the profile of Southern University women’s basketball and, in large part, the profile of women’s basketball in the Southwestern Athletic Conference,” Banks said. “Her commitment to excellence and her passion for teaching the game of basketball has been evident on and off the court.”

Banks continued: “Coach Pugh’s influence in molding the lives of many young women is unparalleled and her accomplishments speak volumes. We commend her for her longevity, relentless pursuit of championships and dedication. We, the Jaguar Nation, are sincerely grateful for her service as an ambassador for this great institution.”

Pugh is expected to be named the head coach at Prairie View A&M later Monday.
