North Carolina A&T State, fresh off winning its second Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) tournament title in three seasons, will head to Columbia, S.C. to open the 2018 NCAA Div. I Women’s Basketball Championship on Friday.

The 15th-seeded Aggies will take on defending national champion and No. 2 seed South Carolina in Colonial Life Arena on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in a game that will be shown live on ESPN2.

The Aggies (24-6), who split the MEAC regular-season title with Bethune-Cookman, defeated Hampton 72-65 in overtime on Saturday to claim the conference’s automatic bid. Kala Green was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Performer, and Alexus Lessears, one of the nation’s best offensive rebounders, was also named to the All-Tournament Team.

South Carolina, No. 7 in the latest Associated Press poll, is 26-6 overall and the defending national champion. The Gamecocks won their fourth straight SEC tournament crown on March 4 with an upset of then-No. 2 Mississippi State. A’ja Wilson, the ESPNW and USA Today National Player of the Year, is a walking double-double, averaging 22.6 points and 11.8 rebounds per game.

Wilson ranked eighth nationally in scoring and 11th in rebounding.

Friday’s match-up is part of the Albany Region, where undefeated Connecticut is the top seed.
