The annual rivalry between Jackson State’s “Sonic Boom of the South” and Southern University’s “Human Jukebox” has become an event so colossal, it has been unofficially named The BoomBox Classic.
Oh, by the way, a football game was played between the two schools as well.
There were few surprises in Southern’s 35-17 win over a winless Jackson State football team, but there were plenty of surprises in the halftime show between the two bands we’ve ranked the best in the country.

Marched in the CIAA back in the 70s for Virginia State College/University. So glad to see the HBCU traditions living on. So proud to have been a part. It is always a close on, but southern continues to find a way to edge out the “boom”. With that run on, the boom should win, but it requires absolute perfection. It just wasn’t there today. Southern’s sound is just superior. I’ve seen video where the boom got ’em, but not this time. Two awesome bands!
Sorry too say I was there and the sound the Boom gave was awesome ??, Now Southern did alright but the sound did pop off the press box like the boom, they played toward the ground not the press box sorry ? I love both, honestly Boom ? hands down
