No. 6 Richmond jumped out to an early 14-0 lead after one and never looked back as they defeated the Howard Bison, 68-21, at Robins Stadium.
Entering Saturday’s contest, HU (1-2) averaged nearly 270 on the ground; however, the Spiders contained the Bison’s rushing attack and held Howard to only 91 yards.
Richmond outscored Howard in the second period, 34-7. Dezmond Wortham scored on a 1-yard TD for the Bison.
After intermission, the Spiders scored two more times and increased their advantage; however, Howard refused to give up as Caylin Newton broke away for a 17-yard TD midway through the third.
In the fourth, Newton connected with Jequez Ezzard for a 28-yard touchdown pass. Ezzard finished with two receptions for 70 yards and a touchdown in the loss.
For the Spiders (2-1), they amassed 622 total yards, including 322 on the ground. Jay Palmer rushed for 102 yards with a touchdown. Quarterback Kyle Lauletta threw for 290 yards and six touchdowns in the victory.
Howard hosts Bethune-Cookman in their home opener. Saturday’s kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. at Greene Stadium.
