Prayer answered: Alabama State to be Jackson State 2023 homecoming opponent

Week 1 of the SWAC Coaches Teleconference was held Monday with all 10 head coaches on the line.

0:00 – James Spady – Alabama A&M

Notes: Coach Spady spoke about the competitiveness of his team against UAB Saturday in a 38-7 loss. And talked about the play of starting quarterback Aqeel Glass.

10:00 – Brian Jenkins – Alabama State

Notes: Coach Jenkins addressed the Hornets’ disappointing 14-6 loss to Tuskegee, but indicated that he is still “excited” about what his team can do the rest of the season.

19:40 – Fred McNair – Alcorn State

Notes: NcNair addressed how pleased he was with the play of his Braves in a 50-21 win over Miles College Saturday, but expressed the need to clean up on a number of penalties the team suffered. He also discussed preparation for his upcoming game Saturday at FIU.

29:25 – Monte Coleman – Arkansas-Pine Bluff

Notes: Defeated Morehouse College 23-10. Coleman talked about the play of his “very young offensive line” and how they contributed to the success of the Golden Lion running game.

40:44 – Broderick Fobbs – Grambling
Notes: Coach Fobbs talked about how hard his team played against Tulane Saturday despite a 44-14 loss. He also talked about the challenge his defense faced in playing against a Tulane offense that plays “option football”.

50:00 – Tony Hughes – Jackson State

Notes: Hughes talked about the obstacles his team faced in playing against a Power 5 program in TCU after being shutout 63-0. He also talked about his upcoming contest against Tennessee State Saturday in the Southern Heritage Classic in Memphis.

1:00:43 – Rick Comegy – Mississippi Valley State

Notes: Comegy talked about his team 72-7 loss to No. 2 North Dakota State. Indicated that he was fortunate not to have any major injury from the game. Will play against Southern Illinois on Saturday.

1:10:45 – Willie Simmons – Prairie View A&M
Notes:
Simmons spoke about the extended time his team has had to prepare for their upcoming game Thursday against Sam Houston State. He also talked about the challenges his team has faced regarding the recovery efforts associated with Hurricane Harvey.

1:20:25 – Dawson Odums – Southern

Notes: Coach Odums talked about the team’s 14-8 win over South Carolina State in the MEAC/SWAC Challenge. He also addressed his plans to prepare his team to face Southern Miss Saturday in Hattiesburg, Miss.

1:30:57 – Michael Haywood – Texas Southern
Notes:
Haywood Spoke about the impact Hurricane Harvey has had on his team. He addressed how his team has been forced to cope in preparing for the Tigers’ upcoming game against Houston Baptist on Saturday.
