NORFOLK, Va., (MEAC) – March 9, 2017 — Marcel Boyd posted a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds as upstart 11th-seeded Howard continued its Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Tournament run with a 68-65 upset of third-seeded Morgan State in a quarterfinal game Thursday night at the Norfolk Scope Arena.
Damon Collins and Charles Williams each scored 14 points as the Bison (10-23) moved on to face second seed Norfolk State Friday at 8 p.m. Morgan State concluded its season at 14-16.
The Bison’s strong and stunning start gave them a 27-17 lead with 8:03 remaining in the first half, and they were able to maintain control the rest of the half for a 40-32 intermission lead and a 42-32 lead on Boyd’s layup with 19:40 remaining.
Morgan State managed to take three one-point leads, the last at 56-55 on Phillip Carr’s jumper with 3:55 to play.
Solomon Mangham’s 3-pointer with 2:06 left followed by two Boyd free throws gave the Bison a 62-57 lead.
Morgan State closed to 65-63 with 14 seconds left and 67-65 with seven seconds remaining, but Kofi Andoh gave the Bison a three-point lead with a free throw with two seconds left. The Bears’ desperation 3-pointer as the horn sounded fell short.
Tiwian Kendley led four Morgan State players in double figures with 17.
