HOUSTON – The Texas Southern Tigers basketball team captured their third consecutive Southwestern Athletic Conference Regular Season Title with a dramatic come from behind victory over the Alcorn State Braves on Thursday in front of an energetic home crowd at the HPE Arena.
Zach Lofton led the charge for TSU scoring a game high 30 points to go along with 7 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 steal.
Kevin Scott and Trae Jefferson each contributed 17 points while Jalan McCloud notched 15 points and 4 rebounds.
The Tigers fell behind double digits in the first half of play but they steadily chipped away at the Braves lead to find their way back into the contest.
TSU trailed 45-39 at the half before outscoring Alcorn State 41-35 in the second half. After 40 minutes of regulation play the two teams went into overtime tied at 80. Texas Southern went on to outscore the Braves 14-8 in the overtime period effectively sealing the game in the Tigers favor.
“This is our third consecutive league title,” said TSU head coach Mike Davis. “Obviously this is huge for our program as that is an impressive feat that took a lot of sacrifice and hard work this season and over the years.”
Texas Southern will close out regular season play at home versus Southern on Saturday for Senior Day.
