Charlotte, NC – Jahlia Williams scored 11 points as Winston-Salem State controlled the second half to beat Elizabeth City State 50-41 in a CIAA Tournament women’s first-round game at Bojoangles’ Coliseum on Tuesday, February 21.
Jasmine Carter added eight points and 12 rebounds for the Rams (14-13 overall), who will face nationally-ranked Virginia Union, the No. 2 Northern Division seed, in the quarterfinal round on Wednesday, Feb. 22 at 2:20 p.m. in Bojangles Coliseum. Jazmyn Saunders and Taylor Boyd each scored eight points and Boyd grabbed nine rebounds.
D’Asya Wilson posted a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Lady Vikings (5-18 overall), seeded sixth in the Northern Division. Keechell Johnson scored nine points and Chalise Greenwood added 10 rebounds.
The Rams, seeded third in the Northern Division, outscored the Lady Vikings 32-20 in the second half to erase a 21-18 halftime deficit. Carter drilled a three-pointer in the third period for a 28-25 Rams lead, their first since first period. The lead extended to 43-29 in the fourth period on Taylor Boyd’s layup with 4:47 left.
The Rams outscored the Lady Vikings 17-8 in bench points. Boyd led five players who scored off the bench for the Rams.
Greenwood had five points, six rebounds, three assists, two blocks and one steal in the first half for the Lady Vikings. Wilson added four points and four rebounds while Nixon and Harvey each scored four points. Williams and Boyd each had four points for the Rams.
The Lady Vikings forced 16 Ram turnovers in the first half. They scored seven points off three turnovers to turn a 11-10 deficit into a 17-11 lead in the first quarter. The Lady Vikings maintained their lead into halftime.
