NEW ORLEANS – The Jackson State University men’s tennis team defeated Alabama State, 4-1 on Sunday at City Park/Pepsi Tennis Center to be named the 2016 Southwestern Athletic Conference Men’s Tennis Champions.
This is the Tigers’ fourth program title and first since the JSU captured the title three-straight seasons in 1996, 1997 and 1998.
In doubles action, Alabama State claimed the first win with a 6-1 decision by Adam Coyne and Takura Mlambo at No. 2 position over Miguel Gomez and Hernan Geria. Jackson State’s Federico Boscarino and Camilo Pation won the No. 1 doubles match 6-3, over Patrik Cvik and Szabin Pusztay. The Tigers’ Richie Agarwal and Federico Mendieta captured the doubles point for JSU with a 7-5 victory over Ronald Mataba and Karlo Skvorc.
In singles action, Boscarino defated Mataba, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles before hit Tiger teammate Stylianos Gkontsaris defeated Pusztay, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 4 position.
Alabama State picked up a point at No. 1 singles, with Takura Mlambo defeating Patino, 6-3, 6-3.
At the No. 6 singles position, Richie Agarwal collected a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Jarred Thompson to clinch the title for the Tigers.
First-year Tigers’ head coach Lois Alexis was named the 2016 SWAC Coach of the year while Agarwal earned SWAC All-Tournament Most Valuable Player honors.
