VALPARAISO, Ind. – Texas Southern ended its season in an opening-round game of the postseason NIT Tuesday night losing to Valparaiso 84-73.
Chris Thomas scored 27 points, eight rebounds and seven assists for the Tigers. Derrick Griffin added 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting, while Malcolm Riley added 12 points to go along with 11 rebounds. Alec Peters scored a game high 28 points to lead Valpo, who is one of four No. 1 seeds in the tournament.
Keith Carter added 17 points and Darien Walker had 14 for the Crusaders, who got their first NIT win in three appearances. Vashil Fernandez matched his career high with eight blocks.
Texas Southern stayed with the Crusaders as the second half opened, making 8 of 12 shots. Then the Tigers went 1 of 10 from the field and fell behind by 11 points.
Peters had 17 points in the first half when Valparaiso (27-6) made six of nine 3-pointers and shot 50 percent for a 41-35 lead.
Texas Southern concludes its season with an 18-15 overall record highlighted by the third consecutive season in which the Tigers have qualified for postseason play.
