MEAC Women’s Weekly Basketball Honors Released – Feb. 1

NORFOLK, Va. – Hampton junior Malia Tate-DeFreitas and Coppin State senior Omaah Tayong were selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Women’s Basketball Co-Players of the Week, the conference announced today. Najai Pollard of Delaware State earned Rookie of the Week honors, while Bethune-Cookman’s Kailyn Williams was selected as the Defensive Player of the Week.

Tate-DeFreitas (G, 5-9, Jr., Harrisburg, Pa.) shot 51-percent (18-of-35) from the floor and 46-percent (6-of-13) from behind the arc during conference wins over South Carolina State and Norfolk State. She registered 30 points, including four 3-pointers, 11 rebounds, two assists and four steals, in a 63-50 win over South Carolina State.

Tayong (F, 6-3, Sr., Baltimore, Md.) averaged a double-double of 17.5 points and 13.5 rebounds, with 3.5 blocks, in wins over North Carolina A&T State and Maryland Eastern Shore. She recorded career-high’s of 20 points and seven blocks against Maryland Eastern Shore. Also, she grabbed 14 rebounds in 32 minutes of action.

Pollard (F, 5-11, Fr., Richmond, Va.) totaled 49 points, 25 rebounds, eight assists, five blocks and two steals, against North Carolina A&T State, North Carolina Central and South Carolina State. She posted a career-high 23 points, on 11-of-15 shooting, with 15 rebounds, four assists and one block, in a 66-56 win over North Carolina Central.

Williams (C, 6-4, Jr., New Orleans, La.) averaged 10.5 rebounds, 6.0 blocks and 1.0 steals in conference victories over Howard and Florida A&M. She grabbed nine boards and blocked eight shots, with two steals, against Florida A&M. Offensively, she tallied 34 points in the two contests.

Other Top Performers: 

Ciani Byrom (UMES) finished with 14 points, three rebounds and four assists, against Coppin State.

Kendra Cooper (B-CU) totaled 40 points, four rebounds, 10 assists and four blocks, in victories over Howard and Florida A&M.

Aaliyah Davis (DSU) registered 11 points, 10 assists, nine rebounds and two steals, in a 66-56 win over North Carolina Central.

Tiyonda Davis (SSU) posted a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds, with four assists, three blocks and one steal, in a win over Norfolk State.

Victoria Gonzales (HOW) averaged 22.0 points and 5.0 rebounds against Bethune-Cookman and Morgan State.

Kenyata Hendrix (SSU) recorded a career-high 28 points, four rebounds, three assists and one steal, against Norfolk State.

Moengaroa Subritzky (UMES) finished with 17 points, nine rebounds, one assist and two steals, against Coppin State.

Zuri White (MSU) posted a career-high 22 points, 13 rebounds, one assist and two steals, in a 78-66 win over Howard.

Khaderja Young (FAMU) tallied 20 points, six boards, three steals and one block, against Bethune-Cookman.
