JACKSON, Miss – In the first conference game of the season, Jackson State needed overtime to defeat Alabama State 70-69 Saturday afternoon.
Alabama State Britney Wright led the game with 22 points and nine rebounds. The Lady Hornets had three players score in double figures, including Ashanti Spencer (10 points), Kayla Stephens (10 points) and Daniele Ewert (10 points).
For the Lady Tigers, Daisha Williams and Kierra Adams each registered team-high 13 points while adding four rebounds. Derica Wiggins, who leads the team in scoring, was held at only two points.
The Lady Hornets won the battle in the second and third quarter by scoring 22 points in the second and 21 points in the third. The Lady Tigers took over the first and the fourth quarter, grabbing 20 points in the first and 17 points in the fourth.
JSU outrebounded the Lady Hornets 47-44 and produced a better three-point average at 33.3, but Alabama State collected better averages in shooting at 33.3 percent to JSU’s 32.3 percent and free throws at 69.7 percent to the Lady Tigers’ 67.5 percent.
