LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Texas Southern lost an 87-81 contest to Howard at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena Monday night.

The Bison jumped ahead with 13:22 left in the first half. With the game tied at 16, Howard put together a 10-0 run to go up 26-16 with just over nine minutes left in the period. The lead largely remained as such until Texas Southern drew to within five on the strength of a 12-5 run – as sparked by Joshua Friar – to end the first half.

Howard rebuilt its lead to 10 to start the second half, but after TSU got to within eight, the Tigers scored 15 of the next 22 points – a run capped by two Malcolm Riley free throws – to tie the game at 65 with 8:27 left.

The Bison pieced together an 11-5 run to take a 76-70 lead with 4:33 left, but Texas Southern fought back to claim a 78-77 lead with 1:34 left. However, Texas Southern lost the advantage for good when it allowed eight unanswered points to the Bison.

Riley accounted for 26 points and 10 boards. David Blanks scored 17 points and added four rebounds and four assists. Orlando Coleman and Jose Rodriguez each scored 13, with Coleman also grabbing 10 rebounds.

For Howard, James Daniel was the high-point man with 30 on the night. Damon Collins added 17 points and six rebounds, and Marcel Boyd and Tyler Stone each notched 10 points.

Grand Canyon 94, Mississippi Valley State 60

PHOENIX, Ariz. –
Mississippi Valley State fell 94-60 at Grand Canyon University Monday night.

Slow starts doomed Mississippi Valley State twice in the game. The Delta Devils allowed Grand Canyon to go on a 17-0 run to open the contest. After ending the half down 44-31, Mississippi Valley State was cold again to begin the second, and the Delta Devils ultimately allowed the Antelopes to score the period’s first 19 points. The ensuing 32-point deficit was too much for the Delta Devils to rebound from.

Latrell Love  and Damian Young were the only starters to score for the Delta Devils, who shot 36.7 percent from the field. Issac Williams scored 15 points – all from three-point range – off the bench.

For GCU, Grandy Glaze scored 22 on 11-of-12 shooting and added 10 boards. Joshua Braun scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds. DeWayne Russell chipped in nine points and 12 assists.
