ORANGEBURG, SC—Senior quarterback Alex Ross threw a game-high 19-of-28 for 195 yards to lead #1 Coastal Carolina to a 41-14 victory over South Carolina State Saturday (Sept. 12) at Oliver. C. Dawson Stadium.
“They (Coastal Carolina) were what expected and they haven’t changed much,” said Bulldog head coach Buddy Pough. “Their execution is what makes them different from other schools. I take my hat off to them, they are a very good football team.”
Pough stated, “We got a lot to work to do. We got to get better, got to make some changes quickly. The early mistakes by us aided or magnified their big first quarter.”
CCU offense exploded racking up 506 yards total offense. Junior running back De’Angelo Henderson led the ground attack with 24 carries for 136 yards and one touchdown. Senior wide receiver John Israel finished with six (6) catches for 87 yards and two touchdowns.
Bulldog freshman quarterback Caleb York who stepped in for injured starter Adrian Kollock , Jr. finished with 16-of-29 for 183 yards and a touchdown. Senior safety Davious Chestnut spearheaded the Bulldog defense with a game-high nine(9) tackles.
South Carolina State returns to action on Thursday (Sept. 17) when they open up conference play against Florida A&M in an pivotal MEAC matchup. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. and will be televised live on ESPN and ESPN3.
