COLUMBIA, S.C. – With less than two weeks before the season opener, the Benedict College football team continues to work hard. The Tigers held their first inter-squad scrimmage on Saturday, and head coach Mike White was pleased with the effort.

“The guys hustled. I was just glad we didn’t get anybody bumped up, no injuries,” White said. “They are going at it. The intensity is good on the field. It’s just going to take us a little while. We have to be patient and hang in there.”

White said the coaching staff continues to evaluate the players and are working to finalize the depth chart.

“We’re getting a little closer to who is going to be on the field. I think we’re going to be one of those teams by committee, you’ll see a lot of platoon in and out. There will be a lot of new and young personnel on the field for the first time. It’s going to take us a little while to get it like we want it but they’re working very hard.”

One position that is still in limbo is at quarterback. Redshirt freshman Mason “Chucky” Duckett and true freshman Kalu Onumah are both battling for the starting job.

“We’re probably be by committee,” White said about his two young quarterbacks. “Kalu has done well. Chucky has done well. Nobody has taken it and ran off with it. They are both making mistakes, then the next day they have a good day. We’ve got to be patient with that group, also.”

White said he sees improvement from the first day of practice just nine days ago.

“The young guys are coming along. The defensive line is coming along. Our secondary is playing a little bit better,” White said. “I do like our leadership. The guys are encouraging each other and pushing each other.”
