NEW ORLEANS, La. – Alcorn State University played its way to the second quarterfinal game of the SWAC baseball tournament with a 13-3 win over Alabama A&M University in seven innings of work. The Braves (16-40) take on the loser of Texas Southern, Grambling State Friday at noon. Alabama A&M closes its season with a 26-31 record.
Ashton Lewis and LaDerrick Williams each finished with a game-high three hits on the day. Williams also earned two runs and two RBI, while Lewis picked up one run and three RBI of his own.
Braves starter Cedric Walker went a complete seven innings to earn his sixth win of the season. He struck out a game-high four while only giving up two earned runs.
Both teams put runs across in the first, but Alcorn opened it up in the bottom of the second inning. With the bases loaded, Williams singled up the middle scoring Walter Vives. Bulldog starter Josh Burchell then walked a run in and hit a batter, giving Alcorn the 3-0 lead. After Burchell struck out the next batter, Ashton Lewis singled through the left side, bringing two more across.
The teams swapped two-run innings before the Braves put five more across in the sixth.
