Southern’s DJ Wallace and Brandon Caples from Alabama State were named SWAC player and pitcher of the week.
Player of the Week – DJ Wallace (Southern)
Wallace’s hot bat helped Southern claim a three-game sweep of rival Grambling last week as the Jaguars finished 3-1. The senior outfielder was 9-15 at the plate with two home runs, one double and five RBIs, capping his three-game stretch with a 1.067 slugging percentage. Wallace added five runs scored and a stolen base during the week. In the Jaguar’s 16-12 series finale win, Wallace posted a .600 batting average, hitting 4-6 at the plate with two RBIs.
Pitcher of the Week – Brandon Caples (Alabama State)
Caples earned the win in relief at two-time defending SWAC champion Jackson State, pitching a career-long 5.1 innings of scoreless relief. He allowed just two hits, no walks, and a career-high tying six strikeouts as the Hornets won their 30th game of the season, the most in the SWAC.
