The Jackson State softball team claimed the 2015 Southwestern Athletic Conference Eastern Division championship Monday with a 14-2 win over Alcorn State.
This marks the Tigers’ third consecutive division title.
In the final game of the series, JSU started by placing seven runs on the board in the first inning.
Canessa Swanson got on base with a single to right field and scored by stealing home, while a walk and two passed ball allowed a point from Victoria Nelson to make the score 2-0.
Taylor Hughes scored a run for Alcorn State at the bottom of the first frame, making the score, 7-1.
From there, the Braves would give up three runs in the second, one run in the third inning and three scores at the top of the fifth. Efforts from Adriana Gutierrez secured another run for Alcorn, but it was not enough as the Tigers were able to end the game in the fifth due to run-rule at 14-2.
Sybil Lozano was credited the win as she tossed four strikeouts in five innings of work.
Nelson, Ashley Neal and AJ Hervey led the game in scoring – each earning two runs – while Smith hit a game-high three RBI.
With this win, JSU has a conference record of 12-4 with one divisional game left in the season.
