New Orleans, La. – After long, competitive single matches, Alabama State Hornets made history after being crowned the 2015 Southwestern Athletic Conference Men’s Tennis Champs. ASU defeated Jackson State University 4-2 Sunday evening at the Hilton Riverside Health Club Tennis Facility.
Double teams Patrik Cvik, Jarred Thompson and Takura Mlambo and Karlo Skvorc got things going when they clinched the doubles point, giving them a one point lead.
Mlambo was named Tournament MVP after going undefeated at No.1 singles. His single match against the Tiger’s No.1 player, Federico Boscarino, went down to the third set. Match scores; 6-7, 6-1, 6-3.
Jackson State managed two, single wins. Stelios Gkontsaris defeated Patrik Cvik, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (4). Camillo Patino defeated Karlo Skvorc at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-4.
Ronald Mataba earned singles victory at the No. 2 spot and Adam Coyne defeated Jackson State’s Vishu Prasad at No. 6 singles.
Anuk Christiansz proudly accepted his award as the 2015 Coach of the Year.
The Hornets will face an opponent to be announced during the NCAA Selection Show. More information to come.
